After leaving the bike place, we took some left turns and some right turns and rode straight for a bit and we ended up in Indianapolis! Odd how that happened. We got to ride through Eagle Creek Park which was very nice.
Patty and Fiona riding through the park.
I had to stop to capture this shot. Loved the sunlight coming down through the green leaves!
And look where we went next! Some of the guys were pretty excited about this. Some of us not so much. ;)
Look! It's the Indy 500 racetrack! A couple of the guys actually worked their way down and rode their bikes for a short distance on the track. That was not an approved activity.
This I thought was cooler. It's the Major Taylor Velodrome. Bike racing and stuff. You could sign a waiver and pay some money and ride on it. The track is pretty steeply sloped so you have to maintain a certain speed to make it really work. I didn't do it but some of the others did. Those are two of our group out there riding on it.
Major Taylor - I remember reading about him at some point but I have nothing for you now.
Al and Gnorman in the picture as well. Also one of Michelle's friends met us there with fresh glazed doughnuts. I had two. Fiona had three. They were very tasty.
From there we were on a bike trail along White River for most of the ride to the motel. It was pretty and the river was running high. When we pressed a button at one of the crosswalks, we were surprised when a booming voice told us to "WAIT!" And it said that every time we punched the button. Which was more than once.
After checking in at the motel and a quick shower, we set out with Vern in search of food. We ended up at Hard Rock Cafe. Lots of paraphernalia from music stars on the walls. My favorite was a sheet of paper with the original lyrics to Proud Mary scribbled on it. There were also a lot of guitars - some broken, some not. I had a bacon cheese burger with fries and finished the whole thing off. I'm thinking it was a 1/2 lb. I was hungry, it was about 3:00 and we hadn't had lunch. Then we strolled through some of the downtown section of Indianapolis.
This big monument is a tribute to veterans from the civil war on up through some of the more recent wars.
Close up of a bison head that was part of the statue work. Some were functioning better than others.
They had some cool old churches.
Our motel was right across the road from this stadium where the Colts play. For dinner that night they gave us gift cards to go to Old Spaghetti Factory. Surprisingly enough, Fiona and I were not all that hungry. We opted to go find a shake to just top off.
The perfect segue into a rest day!
