Day 47 - Canandaigua to Liverpool - 69 miles

I'd been singing the Erie Canal folk song in my head - and sometimes aloud - since Erie, PA so I was excited that we'd actually get to see the canal today and ride alongside it for a while! I had breakfasted with Fiona and Rene and Rene had invited us to ride with the pace line, saying they were planning on an easier pace today. We started out with them and enjoyed that for about 14 miles.

But then we came to Seneca Lake and we needed photos of course! So we let the pace line go on ahead and we became tourists and pretty much remained tourists the rest of the day.

It was so pretty and still peaceful since it was fairly early. We talked with a couple out for their morning stroll and enjoyed cycling along the lake shore.

We stopped off in some of the little towns along the way - Waterloo and Seneca Falls among them.

Seneca Falls had a little museum that we found this map in. They also claim that Beford Falls from It's a Wonderful Life is based on Seneca Falls. It was a charming little town.

It also had a canal!

We stopped at the Erie Canal Park and Museum where Konny had sweet talked the curator and we got a personalized tour. She and her husband have worked at preserving and restoring this site for 35 years. Definitely a labor of love. This mural was in the museum. It shows the aqueduct carrying the canal over a stream.

After the museum tour we rode along the old tow path on our bikes for a few miles.

This is the aqueduct that they restored. Canal on top, stream in the background to the left of my head.

Ten more miles to get to the motel, another day done!
